Shorty vs. regular Bean Cellar

The regular polymer Bean Cellar is a tall, narrow tube sized for 18–22 g espresso doses and designed to sit in a caddy. The Shorty is wider and shorter, holding up to 30 g, which makes it a better match for filter coffee doses or larger espresso doses. The wider shape also means the Shorty stands upright on its own and stacks cap-to-base, so you can line them up on the counter or pile them in the freezer without needing a rack or caddy. If you brew filter coffee (pour-over, AeroPress, BIRD, or similar), the Shorty is the one to get. If you dose strictly in the 18–20 g espresso range and already have a caddy, the regular tube is the more compact option.

How the valve works

Each cap has a proprietary one-way valve with a food-safe TPE rubber gasket molded directly onto the cap body. Freshly roasted coffee releases CO2, which is denser than oxygen. As the CO2 builds up inside the sealed tube, it pushes upward through the valve and displaces the oxygen. The result is that your beans sit in a CO2-rich environment rather than an oxygen-rich one, slowing staling significantly compared to a bag or canister that gets opened daily. Weber’s position on vacuum storage is that vacuums tend to pull out the volatile aromatic compounds you actually want in the cup, so the passive CO2 displacement approach is preferable.

Freezer storage and travel

Polypropylene handles freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, making the Shorty well suited to long-term freezer storage. Weber offers a free 3D-printable STL file for a stackable freezer tray that holds 12 Shortys per layer, so you can stack as many layers as your freezer allows. The Shorty also fits the BIRD hard travel case: 12 Shortys, or 6 Shortys plus a hand grinder.

Frosted vs. Carbon

Both colors are functionally identical. Frosted is translucent, letting you see the beans and quickly identify different coffees. Carbon is opaque black, colored with food-grade carbon added to virgin polypropylene resin. Carbon blocks all ambient light, though Weber notes that light is not a meaningful freshness concern compared to air exposure. If you want total light blocking or just prefer the look, go with Carbon. If you want to tell your coffees apart at a glance, Frosted is more practical.
