Why tamp automatically
Hand tamping is the least repeatable step in espresso prep. Force drifts from shot to shot, the tamper tilts a degree or two, and the tenth shot of the morning rarely gets the same press as the first. A motorised tamper applies the same force at the same angle every time, which removes one variable when you are dialling in and keeps results steady once you have. It also spares your wrist and shoulder if you pull a lot of shots.
The Mignon Automatic Tamper is Eureka’s compact version of this idea. Seat the portafilter in the chrome fork, and the 58 mm piston completes a single tamp in 0.9 seconds or a sequential double tamp in 1.4 seconds. Mode and settings are chosen on the touch display, and the tamping disc lifts out for cleaning. The mechanism is rated for at least 300,000 tamps.
Mignon Automatic Tamper vs. Eureka Disko
Eureka makes two automatic tampers. The Eureka Disko is the café model: taller at 255 mm, 5.5 kg, with automatic portafilter detection through a metal sensor and pressing force adjustable from 10 to 30 kg. The Mignon Automatic Tamper is the home and small-bar version: roughly two-thirds the height, 4 kg, a faster single tamp (0.9 s against 1.5 s) and a longer rated life (300,000 tamps against 200,000). If you run a busy counter with several baristas and mixed portafilters, the Disko’s sensor and pressure range are worth paying for. For a home setup or a single-machine bar, the Mignon tamper does the same core job for less than half the price and in a footprint that matches the grinder.
Fit and compatibility
The fork adjusts in height from 39 mm to 60.6 mm, which covers single-spout, double-spout and bottomless portafilters. The standard disc is 58 mm; if your baskets need a different size, Eureka sells separate disc kits in 53, 54.3, 57.3 and 58.3 mm. Eureka lists the tamper as a match for the whole current Mignon range (Specialità, Silenzio, Zero, Libra, Turbo, Manuale, Bravo, Classico and the rest), but it needs no grinder at all to do its job: any 58 mm portafilter from any machine works.
