What the upper valve does

An E61 group holds a vertical stack of valves that the cam shaft opens in sequence as you move the brew lever. This is the top one. Lift the lever and the cam pushes this valve off its seat so pump water can reach the group; drop the lever and the upper spring (part C219900423) returns it, shutting the water supply off again.

When to replace it

Most E61 valve trouble starts at the rubber seal rather than the brass. Heat cycles harden and crack it, and once it stops sealing you get water weeping into the group or drip tray after the lever is down, and brew pressure that never quite settles. The seal is sold on its own as EX-50000020, so if the brass is clean and the seat undamaged, a seal alone often solves it. Swap the whole valve when the sealing face is pitted, scaled beyond cleaning, or the stem is visibly worn.

Fitment

This is the Profitec and ECM factory part, used across their E61 machines including the Profitec Pro 600 and the Profitec Drive. E61 groups are cast and assembled by several Italian suppliers, and small dimensional differences exist between them, so check the valve against your machine’s own parts diagram before ordering if you are running a different brand.

Servicing the group

The valve sits behind the cam shaft, so reaching it means pulling the group apart. If you are already in there, it is worth replacing the other valve seals and the cam o-rings at the same time and relubricating with food-safe grease.
