Product details
The Olympia Express Cremina SL is a spring-lever espresso machine, hand-built in Switzerland by Olympia Express. It shares the compact Cremina body but uses a redesigned brew group with a compression spring: you raise the lever to load the spring, and the spring delivers a steady, descending brew pressure for you, rather than relying on hand force throughout the shot. It has a manually filled stainless steel boiler and a 49 mm chromed-brass group.

About the Cremina SL
The Cremina SL (SL for Spring Lever) is the spring-loaded version of Olympia Express’s long-running Cremina. It keeps the same compact, manually filled single-boiler platform, but replaces the direct lever with a brew group built around a compression spring. You raise the lever to compress the spring, then the spring releases its tension to push water through the coffee at a steady, naturally descending pressure. This combines the mechanical, pump-free character of a lever machine with more shot-to-shot consistency, since the spring, not your arm, sets the pressure curve.
Build quality and history
Olympia Express was founded in Switzerland in 1928 and built commercial espresso machines for decades before bringing the Cremina in-house in 1967. The Cremina platform has been refined rather than replaced ever since, which is why many machines from the 1970s and 1980s still run today with little more than periodic gasket replacements. The Cremina SL is the more recent, spring-lever development of that same lineage.
Like the rest of the range, the SL is hand-assembled in Switzerland from durable materials. The boiler is stainless steel, the brew group and portafilter are chromed and polished brass, and the steam wand and nozzle are chrome steel. The chrome-steel frame and casing carry a hard-wearing powder coating, the front is high-gloss polished steel, and the SL adds an illuminated operation display. Plastic is kept to a minimum and the top doubles as a cup warmer. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung once called the Cremina among the best espresso machines in the world, a reputation built on this kind of serviceable, long-lived construction.
How it works and who it suits
The boiler sits at a standby pressure of roughly 1.1 to 1.2 bar, with a brewing temperature around 92 °C, and is filled by hand through the top rather than fed by a pump and reservoir. Because the spring meters the pressure, the SL is more forgiving and repeatable than the direct-lever Cremina, at the cost of the fine pressure-profiling control a direct lever gives you by hand. It is built for quality over volume: excellent single and double shots, with enough steam for a drink or two, but not designed for continuous back-to-back service. Pick the SL if you want mechanical lever extraction with hands-off consistency, and the direct-lever Cremina if you want to control the pressure yourself.

Good to know
- The boiler is filled by hand through the top, not plumbed and not fed by a reservoir and pump.
- EU models include an automatic shut-off that cuts power after about an hour. Switching the machine off and on again resets the timer.
- Gaskets are a wear item and need occasional replacement, which is normal for a machine designed to last decades.
- A bottomless portafilter and aftermarket baskets are popular upgrades, as the standard double basket holds a fairly small dose.
