La Marzocco’s tool for removing the shower screen on the Linea Micra, Linea Mini, GS3 and other La Marzocco groups. The shower screen is held by a single centre screw, and this screwdriver is built around the two things that go wrong when you remove it: dropping the small screw, and burning your fingers on a group that is still hot.
A wide conical guard sits between the handle and the tip, so your hand never touches the screen or the drips coming off the group, and the tip holds the screw so it stays with the tool instead of falling into the drip tray.

Why the shower screen needs to come off
Backflushing cleans the group from the inside, but coffee oils and fines still build up on the back of the shower screen and in the diffuser behind it. Left alone, the holes clog unevenly and the water hits the puck in a lopsided pattern, which shows up as channelling and inconsistent shots. La Marzocco recommends removing the screen for a soak in cleaning powder on a regular schedule, and that is a job most people put off because it means a small screw, a hot group and a drip tray full of water.
What this tool changes
The screwdriver has a wide cone-shaped guard that covers the whole shower screen while you work. Hot water that drips from the group runs down the outside of the cone instead of onto your fingers, and you can do the job straight after a shot rather than waiting for the machine to cool. The tip holds the screen screw, so it comes out and goes back in on the tool. Combined with a puck screen such as the Normcore Puck Screen, which keeps most of the grounds off the shower screen in the first place, cleaning becomes a two-minute task rather than a weekend job.
