The flapper sits where ground coffee leaves the burr chamber of the E64 WS on its way to the spout. The burrs throw the coffee out at speed, and the flapper slows it down and breaks up clumps so it drops into the portafilter instead of spraying around it. This set is made for the Mahlkönig E64 WS Espresso Home grinder only. The E65S and E80S grinders look similar inside but use their own flapper sets.

Silicone and metal together

The first E64 WS grinders shipped with a silicone flapper only. Later units come with an additional metal flapper that fits behind the silicone one at the grounds chute, which helps the coffee fall cleanly and accurately into the portafilter. This set contains both parts, so it works as a replacement for a worn set and as an upgrade for grinders that only have the silicone flapper. Mahlkönig recommends two different setups depending on your grind setting and the coffee you use, and explains both in the video below.

When to replace it

Mahlkönig treats flappers as wear parts that should be checked during regular cleaning and replaced when performance drops. In the E64 WS troubleshooting guide, cleaning the silicone and metal flapper is listed as one fix, and replacing the silicone flapper once it is worn as another. So if you are seeing more mess or clumping than usual, clean the flapper first; if the silicone looks deformed, torn or has lost its stiffness, it is time for a new set.

Fitting it

Swapping the flapper means opening the grinding chamber, so unplug the grinder and empty the bean hopper before you start. Mahlkönig’s video below walks through the whole process. Mahlkönig’s general guidance is that repairs should be carried out by qualified technicians, and that unauthorised repairs may affect warranty coverage. If your grinder is still under warranty and you are unsure, get in touch with us before fitting it yourself.
