Overview

Type A is the first paper filter in UFO’s range, designed specifically for the UFO Dripper and its 80-degree interior angle. UFO is a South Korean brand, and its drippers and filters are designed and made in Korea. The filter sits on the dripper’s internal blocks above the air channels, holding its shape rather than collapsing inward, which keeps drawdown even from bloom to finish. Compared with a standard fast cone filter, Type A flows at a deliberately medium pace to lengthen contact time and hold back fines.

Who it’s for

The medium flow makes Type A well suited to today’s heavily processed coffees, anaerobic naturals, yeast-inoculated lots, and co-fermented beans, where the cell structure is already broken down and solubility is high. With those coffees it is easy to over-extract, so the recommended approach is to grind on the coarser side (around 850–1,000 microns, or 27 to 30 clicks on a Comandante C40) to reduce surface area. It also pairs well with a Melodrip, which disturbs the coffee bed less than a gooseneck pour and further limits fines migration. For a faster, brighter cup with washed coffees, many brewers reach for one of the faster UFO filters instead.

A note on fit

Type A is sized like an 01 filter. It works in the larger UFO V3 (02 size) but will sit lower, like an 01 paper in an 02 brewer; for a flush fit in the V3, the taller Type F is the better match.
