Overview

The Timemore Chestnut C5 ESP is a 2025-generation manual coffee grinder designed to handle the full range of brewing, from espresso through to cold brew. It sits at the precise end of the C5 family: the ESP designation means a finer adjustment mechanism of 15 microns (0.015mm) per click, compared with roughly 31 microns on the standard C5. That finer pitch is what makes confident espresso dialing possible by hand, while the same grinder still opens up coarse enough for French press.

Burrs and grind quality

At the core are Timemore’s 7th-generation S2C-042-III conical burrs in a 42mm diameter, larger than many manual grinders and even some electric models. The seven-angle geometry uses a cut-before-grind action with extended cutting edges, which speeds up grinding and tightens particle distribution. A double-bearing central axis keeps the burr aligned during grinding, which is a large part of what keeps the grind consistent shot to shot.

Build and handling

The body is a one-piece CNC-machined all-metal construction with a grooved, diamond-pattern texture for a secure grip, so it stays steady and comfortable through the higher resistance of fine espresso grinding. The handle folds against the body, which makes the grinder more compact for travel and helps it sit balanced on a counter. The handle itself runs on bearings with a rubber stop to avoid metal-on-metal contact.

Cleaning

The grinder uses a drop-out burr design. Unscrew the catch cup, remove the handle, and the internal burr assembly detaches for cleaning with a dry brush. It should not be washed with water; brush it clean and dry after use to protect the burrs and bearings.
