What the camshaft does
Everything the brew lever does, it does through this shaft. The lever clamps onto one end, and the machined lobes along its length bear on the stems of the three valves stacked inside the group: the upper brew valve (C219900424), the middle pre-infusion valve (C219903081) and the lower drain valve (C219900430). Raise the lever partway and the group starts filling at line pressure; raise it fully and the pump water comes through; drop it and the drain valve opens to vent the puck. The shaft turns in two brass bearing surfaces, sealed against the group by a pair of cam gaskets (C469900421).
When to replace it, and when not to
A stiff, squeaky lever, or water seeping out around the lever pivot, is nearly always the cam gaskets rather than the shaft itself. Those are cheap, and a service with fresh seals and food-safe lubricant fixes most of it. The shaft is the part to replace when the lobes are visibly worn or scored, when the bearing surfaces have been running dry long enough to gall, or when the lever no longer holds firmly at the brew position. Running a dry or scaled cam is what damages it, so relubricate at every group service.
Fitment
Used across the Profitec and ECM E61 range, including machines like the Profitec Ride and the Profitec Pro 400. The same shaft appears in ECM diagrams for the Synchronika, Technika and Puristika. Other manufacturers use E61 groups from various Italian suppliers with small dimensional differences, so check your own parts diagram before ordering if your machine is a different brand.

Servicing the group
Getting the shaft out means removing the lever, the flange and the front of the group, which is the same teardown as a full valve service. If you are that far in, it makes sense to do the valves and gaskets in one go and reassemble everything with a food-safe lubricant such as Molykote 111.
