Product details

Genuine AeroPress paper micro-filters for standard size AeroPress brewers, available in unbleached natural paper or chlorine-free white paper. Both are cut to 63.5 mm so they sit flat in the filter cap with no bypass around the edge, and both filters trap fines and absorb some of the bitter-tasting oils for a clean, grit-free cup.

  • Choose your paper: Natural (unbleached) or White
  • Diameter: 63.5 mm (2.5″), custom cut for the standard AeroPress
  • Fits: AeroPress Original, Clear, Premium, Steel, Go and Go Plus
  • Does not fit: AeroPress XL (that size needs XL filters)
  • Disposal: Biodegradable and compostable, grounds and filter go in the same bin

What these are

These are the standard paper filters AeroPress makes for its own brewers, the same discs that ship inside a new AeroPress. The paper is thin and tightly woven with micro-sized holes, so it catches fines that would otherwise end up as sediment in the cup, and it absorbs part of the oil fraction that carries bitterness. That is the main reason AeroPress coffee tastes cleaner than a French press brewed with the same grounds, even though both are immersion methods.

Because the discs are cut to the exact inner diameter of the filter cap, water is pushed through the coffee bed rather than around its edge. An undersized third-party disc lets a little water bypass the puck, which shows up as thin, under-extracted coffee.

Natural or white: what actually changes

The difference is how the paper is finished, not how it filters. The white filters are made from chlorine-free paper, using the non-elemental chlorine process that filter mills switched to in the late 1980s, so there is no dioxin byproduct involved. The natural filters skip whitening entirely and keep the brown colour of the pulp.

In practice, most people pick on preference: white if you want the familiar look and slightly less paper character out of the packet, natural if you would rather avoid a bleaching step altogether. Either way, a quick rinse with hot water before brewing is worth doing. It washes off loose paper taste and preheats the filter cap at the same time, and it matters a little more with unbleached paper.

Paper compared to a metal filter

Paper and metal give genuinely different cups, so it is common to own both. Paper holds back oils and fines, which favours clarity and works well with light and medium roasts. A reusable disc such as the AeroPress Stainless Steel Filter lets those oils through for a heavier body closer to a French press, with no consumable to restock. Some brewers stack a paper filter on top of a metal one to get body and clarity together.

Paper also pairs well with the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap, since the valve holds pressure until you press, and a paper filter with a darker roast is what produces the espresso-style crema people chase with that cap. Whichever filter you use, grind consistency does more for the result than the paper does: a burr grinder like the 1Zpresso J gives you the even, slightly-finer-than-drip particle size the AeroPress is built around.
