El Árbol is located in Dipilto, a region in northern Nicaragua that has become well-known for the success of its coffee farmers in the Cup of Excellence competition. The climate and altitude in Dipilto provide ideal conditions for growing coffee. El Árbol is unique because it is not run by a traditional coffee farming family, but rather by a group of friends in the coffee business, one of whom was Per Nordby. The farm was purchased in 2015 with the goal of changing the coffee supply chain and experimenting with post-harvest processing methods like drying and fermentation. This particular coffee was created by using carbonic maceration fermentation on small batches of coffee cherries, before drying them on shaded African beds to maintain the intensity of their flavor.
