How grind by weight works on the Mini g
A timed grinder doses by seconds, so every grind adjustment, new bag or change in bean density shifts the dose and has to be corrected by hand. The Mini g has a load cell built into the portafilter holder instead. You set a target weight, start the grinder by pressing the portafilter or the included dosing cup against the switch, and it stops when the scale reaches the dose. Mazzer quotes a dose accuracy of ±0.1 g, and the display shows the actual weight of the ground coffee after each dose. A vibration filtering algorithm keeps the reading steady when the counter is shaking from a running espresso machine.
The colour TFT display can be set to 19 languages. It stores three doses, each programmable by weight or by time, plus a manual mode. It also handles load cell recalibration, a dose countdown, daily statistics, and alerts for service intervals, worn burrs and an empty hopper.
Burrs, motor and build
The 64 mm 233M burrs are made of bearing steel in Mazzer’s own factory. Mazzer describes the cup as balanced, with a velvety texture and enough body to cut through milk, which makes them a good fit for milk drinks and medium roasts. The asynchronous motor turns them at 1,400 rpm (50 Hz) and grinds about 2 to 2.5 g per second, so an 18 g dose takes roughly 7 to 9 seconds. The body is die-cast aluminium, and Mazzer supports its grinders with spare parts for many years. Mazzer rates the Mini g for up to 1 kg of coffee per day.
The included magnetic stainless steel dosing cup aligns itself under the spout and is shaped for 58 mm portafilters, so it pairs well with machines such as the Profitec Drive. An adjustable portafilter holder centres the grounds in the basket, and an antistatic system keeps coffee dust off the counter. The Polished Aluminium version is polished by hand; faint flow lines from the casting process are normal, and the finish can be polished again if it picks up light scratches.
A hopper grinder, not a single doser
The Mini g is designed to work from a full hopper. With beans in the hopper, about 8 g of coffee stays in the grinding chamber and chute (Mazzer’s figure), and that is roughly what you purge after a big grind change. It can be single dosed, with retention around 0.1 g once the first few doses have settled, but if you switch coffees every day, a dedicated single dose grinder such as the Mazzer Philos is the better tool.
Mini g vs Mahlkönig E64 WS
The E64 WS is the other compact 64 mm grind by weight grinder in this class. It adds motorised grind adjustment, a burr distance readout and app connectivity. The Mini g is the simpler machine: a manual stepless collar, an asynchronous motor and a die-cast aluminium body, with the burrs and the grinder itself made in Mazzer’s factory in Italy. Fewer motorised parts also means fewer things that can need service, which is worth weighing if the grinder will run every day for years.
