The Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3 is a brewing scale built around three use cases: pour-over, espresso, and general weighing. A physical slider on the side switches between the three modes, each with its own timer behavior. In Pour-Over mode the scale shows live flow rate (g/s) and a running coffee-to-water ratio; in Espresso mode it auto-tares, starts the timer when flow is detected, and stops when the cup is removed; in Regular mode everything is manual.
Compared to the Basic 2, the Basic 3 reads accurately from 0.2 g instead of 0.5 g, adds the live ratio display, and is roughly 35% thinner. It also includes an electromagnetic shield in the chassis, which keeps readings stable when the scale sits on a machine’s drip tray or near magnetic catch cups, a common pain point with cheaper espresso scales.
Who it’s for
If you already brew pour-over and want reproducible recipes, the live ratio display removes the mental math during brewing, and the flow rate readout helps you dial in a more even pour over time. For espresso, the hands-free auto-start and auto-stop is useful if you pull shots without a timer built into your machine. If you only need a basic kitchen scale, the Basic 3 is overbuilt; a standard 0.1 g kitchen scale without brewing modes will do the job for less.
