Amenaza Menor is a decaffeinated coffee from Colombia, composed of Pink Bourbon from nine different farms in the Huila region. The farms are located in the municipalities of Santa Maria, Icononzo, Rovira, Rioblanco and Ibagué, at between 1700 and 2000 meters above sea level. The coffee is purchased through Langøra’s partner Azahar Coffee.

Pink Bourbon is a sought-after coffee bean known for its aromatic and complex expression. In this batch we get a clean and balanced cup with fine sweetness and freshness. The coffee is washed and then decaffeinated using the so-called Sugarcane method, or the ethyl acetate process. Here, ethyl acetate extracted from sugar cane is used to extract the caffeine from the coffee beans. The process takes place after the coffee has already been processed and dried to the parchment stage.

First, the green coffee is steamed and moistened to open the beans and prepare them for extraction. The beans are then placed in tanks where ethyl acetate circulates through the coffee and binds to the caffeine. The coffee is steamed again to remove any ethyl acetate residue, before being dried back to the correct moisture level.

The cherries used in the washed batches are grown at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 meters above sea level, while the naturally processed batches come from altitudes between 1,400 and 2,000 meters. Harvesting usually takes place between July and August.

The result is a decaffeinated coffee with much of the character and complexity we expect from a good specialty coffee. Juicy, sweet and balanced, with notes of green apple, caramel and white flowers.
