Urnex Grindz is a cleaner for stand-alone coffee grinders. The bean-shaped tablets are made from grains and cereals: you grind them through like coffee, and they loosen stuck coffee particles while absorbing the oily residue that builds up on the burrs and in the grinding chamber.
It cleans without taking the grinder apart, so it fits easily into a routine between deeper cleans. Grindz is for stand-alone grinders only. For the built-in grinder of a bean-to-cup machine, use SuperGrindz instead.

What builds up inside a grinder
Every time you grind, a little coffee stays behind on the burrs and in the grinding chamber. Coffee beans are oily, and over weeks those oils and fine particles build up and go stale. That shows up as a flatter, more bitter cup, and after a dark roast or a flavoured coffee the old taste can carry over into the next one. A brush clears loose grounds, but not what sticks to the burrs. Grinding cleaning tablets through reaches those surfaces without opening the grinder.
How to use Grindz
- Empty the hopper and grind out the coffee left in the grinding chamber.
- Add 1 capful (35 to 40 g) for a home or espresso grinder, or 2 capfuls (70 to 80 g) for a shop grinder.
- Set the grinder to a medium setting and grind the tablets through.
- Purge by grinding coffee beans through twice, and throw those grounds away.
- Wipe any dust from the hopper, spout and doser, then set the grinder back to your usual setting.
Grinding the tablets can make some dust, which is harmless. Keep the jar tightly closed and dry between uses. Check your grinder’s manual before the first clean, as a few manufacturers advise against cleaning tablets. How often to clean depends on how much you grind: a common routine at home is every couple of months, or each time you descale your espresso machine.
Grindz or SuperGrindz?
Both work the same way but are made for different machines. With a stand-alone grinder, the ground tablets land in a cup or doser and are thrown away. In a bean-to-cup machine the grounds go straight on into the brew unit, so standard Grindz should not be used there. For those machines, the water-repellent Urnex SuperGrindz is made for the job.
