Omega X or Omega
Mazzer makes the Omega in two versions with the same body and burrs. The standard Omega moves 33 microns per click and covers every brew method in one turn of the dial, so each number on the dial means one setting. The Omega X moves 11 microns per click and takes more than one turn to go from espresso to French press, which spreads the espresso range over many more settings and makes small corrections easier. If you only brew filter and moka, the standard Omega is simpler to read; if you want to grind for espresso by hand, the X is the one to get.
| Feature | Omega X | Omega |
|---|---|---|
| Step size | 11 microns per click | 33 microns per click |
| Dial | More than one turn from espresso to French press | All methods in one turn |
| Best suited to | Espresso and filter | Filter, moka, beginners |
| Burrs | 47 mm stainless steel conical | 47 mm stainless steel conical |
Suggested starting settings
Mazzer’s starting points for the Omega X are listed below. Treat them as a place to begin: roast level, bean age and your brewer will move the right setting up or down.
| Ibrik / Turkish | 6 to 8 |
|---|---|
| Espresso | 8 to 10+4 |
| Moka pot | 10+4 to 10+8 |
| Filter | 10+8 to 20+2 |
| French press | 20+2 to 20+6 |
Build and daily use
The burrs are made of stainless steel, which keeps them parallel over time and protects them from oxidation if you spray the beans with a little water (RDT) to reduce static. This Omega X has Mazzer’s Soft burr set (199C), designed to take less effort per turn than the Fast set while still giving an even particle size. The aluminium lid stops beans jumping out while you grind, a quick-release knob makes loading easy, and the 42 g capacity covers a double espresso or a large pour-over.
The grounds canister doubles as a dosing tool: it fits into 58 mm portafilter baskets and the AeroPress, so you can transfer coffee without spilling. Tapping the bottom of the grinder on the counter before opening the canister helps with static. Clean it with a dry brush or cloth only; none of the parts are dishwasher safe. If you brew filter only and want a lighter, less expensive grinder, a pour-over focused hand grinder such as the 1Zpresso ZP6 Special is worth a look.
