Product details
The Gene Cafe CBR-101 is a home coffee roaster built around a rotating glass drum that turns off-axis, so the beans tumble end over end instead of just spinning in place. Heat comes from indirect hot air rather than a hot metal surface, which means nothing scorches against the drum wall.
Time and temperature are set independently and can be changed at any point during the roast, so you can hold a drying phase, push through first crack, and drop the heat before second. The glass chamber lets you watch colour develop the whole way through.
- Batch size: 50 to 250 g of green coffee
- Roast time: roughly 15 to 22 minutes, plus about 10 minutes cooling
- Control: independent time (0 to 30 min) and temperature (up to 250 °C) dials
- Chamber: heat-resistant tempered glass (Pyrex), fully removable
- Chaff: removable collector with a port for 3″ dryer duct
- Power: 1300 W, 5.5 kg, 490 × 243 × 229 mm

Off-axis rotation and indirect hot air
The drum in the CBR-101 does not sit on a straight axis. It rotates at an angle, so beans travel the length of the chamber and back rather than riding the wall, which is the main reason the roast comes out evenly coloured across the batch. Heat arrives as circulated hot air, never through direct contact with a heating element, so there is no facing or tipping from beans resting against hot metal. Because the chamber is clear glass, you can see the colour change through the whole roast, and the machine is quiet enough that first crack is audible if you stand close.
Batch size and how to use it
250 g is the stated maximum, but most experienced users load 200 to 225 g. Filling the chamber right to the line reduces bean movement and gives a less even roast, so leaving headroom is worth doing. At the other end the machine handles batches as small as 50 g, which is useful for sample roasting a new green coffee before committing to a kilo of it. Roasts typically run 15 to 22 minutes plus a cooling cycle of around 10 minutes, and ambient temperature matters: on a cold Norwegian morning you will need noticeably more time to reach first crack than in summer.
A batch of the Kenya Thirikwa Gakuyu-ini Peaberry is a reasonable place to start, since peaberries are uniform in size and density and roast predictably. Once the coffee has rested a couple of days, single-dose storage such as the Weber Workshops Bean Cellars works well for freshly roasted beans, because the one-way valve lets CO2 out while keeping oxygen from getting back in.
Smoke and venting
Roasting produces smoke, especially past first crack. The oversized chaff collector on the CBR-101 pulls chaff and gases away from the beans before they can taint the flavour, and it has a port that accepts standard 3″ dryer duct so you can run the exhaust out a window. Roasting indoors without venting is possible for lighter roasts but will set off a sensitive smoke alarm.
How it compares to an automated roaster
The CBR-101 is a manual machine. You watch, you listen, and you adjust. That is either the appeal or the drawback depending on how you like to spend twenty minutes. If you would rather load beans, pick a profile and walk away, the Kaffelogic Nano 7e runs written profiles automatically and logs the result, at a considerably higher price and a smaller batch size. Note also that the Gene Cafe has a non-defeatable safety feature: it beeps during the roast and you must press the blue button to confirm you are still present, otherwise it drops into cooling. It is there to stop unattended roasting, and it cannot be disabled.
