At an altitude of 1,600 masl this beautiful farm is blessed with light mist, rich volcanic black soil, fresh water springs and surrounded by mountain forests. Many varieties of native trees such as guava, cuellito, cedar, cenizos, higueron, and poro are growing all over the farm, providing the coffee plants beneath them with an abundance of nutrients and shade.
In 1880, Engineer Joseph De Dianous moved from his native France to Panama, to work for the French Panama Canal Company. In 1914, his son Gabriel de Dianous purchased land in Bajo Mono, Boquete, where he founded “Finca Gladys”, in honor of his wife. Gabriel instilled his passion for quality and excellence in his children. In 1991 Teresita (Gabriel’s daughter) and her husband Ricardo Fernandez acquired Finca Gladys, where they founded Cafetalera Fernandez Estate. They quickly began to expand further and in 2003 they purchased “Gran Paradiso”, a neighbouring plantation. They acquired “Finca La Fortuna” shortly thereafter, where they grow and harvest superb estate coffee under the name of Gran del Val.
In 1997, Cafetalera Fernandez engineered Panama’s first Rainforest Alliance N.Y. certified coffee mill. The mill uses the latest technology in coffee production and uses minute amounts of water in an effort to preserve natural resources and promote sustainable farming.
